The Flood That Divided Bubur: Remembering August 26, 2022

On August 26, 2022, Bubur experienced one of the most devastating events in its recent history. A massive flash flood swept through the village, leaving destruction in its wake and forever changing the lives of many families who call this place home.

The flood claimed eight lives. It destroyed homes, agricultural fields, and vehicles, and tore through critical infrastructure the village depended on — the Bubur agricultural water channel, drinking water pipelines, and local roads. The force of the water was severe enough to physically divide the village into two separate parts, cutting off access between communities that had always been connected.

In the aftermath, government support was limited. A lack of machinery and resources on the ground meant that Bubur, in large part, had to face the crisis on its own. Schools across the village were forced to close, including Diamond Jubilee School, which was itself damaged by the flooding. For many families who had lost their homes, these same school buildings became temporary shelter — the only safe spaces left standing.

What unfolded in the days that followed was chaotic and difficult. Families searched for missing loved ones. People who had spent their lives building homes, cultivating fields, and running small livelihoods watched much of it disappear within hours. For many, the flood didn’t just destroy property — it destroyed a source of income and a sense of stability that would take years to rebuild.

Amid this crisis, it was the people of Bubur who stepped forward first. The village’s youth, alongside senior community leaders, took on the responsibility of evacuating residents from danger and moving them to safer ground. Without waiting for outside intervention, they organized themselves in real time — guiding families to safety, checking on the vulnerable, and helping however they could in a situation with no clear roadmap.

The flood of August 2022 is not a story Bubur tells to dwell on loss. It is remembered because it revealed something about this village: that when the systems meant to protect us are stretched thin or absent, the people of Bubur do not wait — they act, together, for one another.

This platform exists in part because of what that day taught us. A community that documents its history, strengthens its own governance, and stays prepared is a community better equipped to face whatever comes next.
